RESEARCH

Jenna April Liuzzi is a doctoral candidate in the Department of French and Italian. Combining the fields of literary and cinematic studies, gender and sexuality studies, victimology, and trauma studies, her dissertation focuses on representations of female victims of sexual violence in contemporary French literature and film, most notably in formally experimental works by authors such as Virginie Despentes, Vanessa Springora, and Hélène Duffau. Jenna argues that the works she examines transmit and transform knowledge about victimhood by undermining audience expectations regarding this perennial figure. More specifically, her dissertation demonstrates how these works strategically utilize narrative, formal innovation, and aesthetics to render a nuanced and dynamic portrait of victimhood, inviting audiences to sharpen their empathetic practices. She ultimately establishes that these works are audience-oriented artifacts that unsettle in order to challenge misconceptions of the figure of the victim while underscoring the ethics and complexity of survival. Through her research, she seeks to widen public understandings of how we regard, discuss, judge, and often dismiss the accounts of those to whom sexual violence has been done.

In 2022-2023, Jenna held a Cotsen Junior Fellowship under the guidance of Professor Rentzou which allowed her to collaborate in the research, development, and implementation of a new undergraduate course (FRE 354) while strengthening her teaching skills at Princeton. For the 2023-2024 academic year, Jenna was awarded a Laurance S. Rockefeller Graduate Prize Fellowship through the University Center for Human Values (UCHV) at Princeton.

Jenna holds a M.A. in French from Princeton and a M.A. in French with a specialization in Literature from Middlebury College in Paris, France, with additional coursework completed at the Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris III. Her M.A. thesis entitled “Mais pourquoi dansez-vous, Salomé?: Une réflexion sur celle qui danse à la veille du XXe siècle,” which focuses on representations of the dancing figure of Salomé primarily evoked in works by Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Flaubert, Huysmans, Wilde, and Apollinaire, was awarded the Frieda Derdeyn Bambas Prize in French Literary Studies by the faculty at Middlebury College.

As an undergraduate, Jenna was invited into Phi Beta Kappa, graduating summa cum laude with a B.A. in French and a minor in Art History from Agnes Scott College in 2013. Her undergraduate research in French culminated in a thesis that examines the violent treatment and deformation of the female body in a selection of poems from Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs du mal.

TRAUMA-INFORMED YIN YOGA INSTRUCTION

In addition to her research interests, Jenna is passionate about wellness and healthy movement. She is a classically trained ballet dancer, a black belt in American Style Karate, and a certified Pure Barre instructor. As a certified Yin Yoga teacher (RYT-200), Jenna offers group classes through the Graduate College at Princeton University as well as private instruction. Through her trauma-informed Yin classes, Jenna seeks to offer a nurturing and uplifting environment in which individuals feel both safe and empowered, while learning to practice self-care and self-compassion.

Jenna began her study of yoga in 2009. She completed her 200-hour Yin Yoga Teacher Training under the guidance of Leslie Glickman at Yoga Journey in Boca Raton, Florida. Jenna has also completed a Yin Yoga Teacher Training through Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health.

She completed the Foundational Training offered by Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY), which is facilitated by the Center for Trauma and Embodiment (CFTE) at Justice Resource Institute. TCTSY is an intervention based on research from The Trauma Center in Boston, Massachusetts. CFTE is an organization devoted to, in their words, “researching, developing, and training providers in effective, trauma-informed practices that help survivors safely re-connect to their body so that they may engage more fully with their life.” Click here for more information about their mission.

Jenna also completed a Trauma-Informed Yoga Teacher Training through Exhale to Inhale, an organization that specifically seeks to empower those affected by domestic violence and sexual assault through the healing and therapeutic power of trauma-informed yoga. For further information about their mission, click here.

Additionally, Jenna has studied with Somatic Experiencing International (SEI) in order to expand her theoretical framework for understanding and addressing trauma physiology.

A Note About the Artist Featured on This Site

The artworks that you see on this site are painted by Jenna's maternal grandmother Martha Arnone Leone, a beautiful artist who was the unfortunate victim of sexual violence early in her life. Though she rarely spoke of her past, her works primarily feature representations of women, suggesting a keen interest in shedding light on the lives and everyday experiences of women--an interest that is wholeheartedly shared by her granddaughter, Jenna.
